Dr Afridi sentence is wrong: U.S. State Dept

Washington :   The United States has reiterated that it believed Dr Shakil Afridi”s sentence was wrong, and added that he should not have been locked up or charged in the first place.

“We”ve been absolutely clear, publicly and privately, that we think it”s wrong he”s locked up, we think it”s wrong that he”s being prosecuted,” The News quoted U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, as saying.

She said Dr Afridi did a service not only for the U.S. but for Pakistan as well.

“And that in fact the role that he (Dr Afridi) played did a service not only for the world and the United States but obviously for the security of Pakistan. This was one of the biggest killers out there,” Nuland added.

Dr Afridi was sentenced to 33 years of imprisonment by Pakistan on charges of treason, after he was found “guilty” of helping the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) help track down Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.
