Contempt of court: Malik Riaz tenders unconditional apology

ISLAMABAD :  During hearing of the show-cause notice against him on Wednesday, Business tycoon Malik Riaz tendered an unconditional apology in the Supreme Court.

In a reply submitted in the Supreme Court on behalf of Riaz by his counsel Dr Basit, Riaz maintained that he had no intentions to target Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in his press conference, but to unveil the corruption of Arsalan Iftikhar.

A three-member bench of the apex court comprising Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Ejaz Afzal and Justice Athar Saeed was hearing the case.

Riaz said that he apologises if his press conference had given the court an impression that he was targeting the Chief Justice Iftikhar and his family, saying that he was sorry if his press conference had led to the obstruction of justice.

He said he had no choice, but to hold the briefing  to expose Arsalan  and not to tarnish the image of the chief justice. He confessed that his meetings with Justice Iftikhar had been held with consent from the latter.

Moreover, he also submitted a separate plea in the court seeking that Dr Arsalan Iftikhar be summoned to the court.

The show-cause notice was issued on June 13 to Riaz for hurling serious, but contradictory allegations against Chief Justice and his son on an issue that is sub-judice during a press conference on June 12.
