KARACHI : Sindh High Court Tuesday directed Sindh Home Department, Sindh Police IG and other police high ups to ensure full protection & security to a practicing lawyer, Maqboolur Rehman, who allegedly received threats for pursuing missing person cases.
A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Mushir Alam & Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, also issued notice to Sindh Home Secretary, IG Police Sindh, DIG (Investigation), DIG (Operations) & Advocate General Sindh for a date in office.
Petitioner, Advocate Maqboolur Rehman, approached SHC seeking protection to his life in terms of Article 9 of Constitution. He impleaded Sindh Home Secretary, IG Police Sindh, DIG (Investigation) & DIG (Operations) as respondents.
He submitted he was running NGO World Reform Commission, which provides legal aid, medical deserving & needy people without discrimination. He submitted he was practicing, especially on criminal side, thus proceedings number of high profile cases pending in courts in Karachi, including at Sindh High Court.
Maqboolur Rehman said he is pursuing, following up cases of missing persons, therefore, intimidation, harassment & threats are being extended to him to desist from pursuing such cases. Therefore, some people were chasing him on his way to office & home due to which was he unable to open his office & perform professional duties.
He submitted six months ago he sent application to Karachi Bar Association and CID police seeking security. CID authorities forwarded application to SHO Risala police station, Karachi, for taking steps. But, police officials did not take any action in this regard.
According to him request was made to authority concerned & Sindh High Court Bar Association of which Petitioner is a member. He said today a lawyer, Waheedur-Rehman, was targeted. He said he will not be able to render legal assistance to destitute & victim of crime unless security was provided to him. He prayed to direct respondents to provide him security & order them to take steps in light of report of CID police.
SHC order said: Let notice be issued to Respondents as well as learned Advocate General Sindh. In meantime, Respondents are directed to ensure that life & liberty of Petitioner is fully secured & protected. To come up immediately after Eid.
