MQM decries firing at poetry reading venue

Karachi,   Mutahidda Qaumi Movement on Monday blasted the Awami National Party for disrupting the gathering of  Aalmi Mushaira  held at Two-Swords roundabout in Clifton on Sunday night by intense gun firing, thus making foreign guests, civil society members, poets and media persons hostage in the venue. The event was organized by the Defense-Clifton Resident Committee of MQM.

Speaking to a press conference at Khursheed Hall at MQM headquarters Nine Zero, Rabita Committee member Kanwar Naveed Jameel said one of the gunmen who opened fire using modern arms at the attendants of Aalmi Mushaira was killed in police counter attack and later identified as Kamran Khan, an activist of ANP. He said those fled away the crime scene also belonged to the same party.

Mr. Naveed said the firing remained continue for some time that also damaged the vehicles of police, media persons and visitors.  The move was aimed at sabotaging the gathering,  he said.

Rabita Committee Member said ANP leaders on one hand were propagating the non-violence philosophy of Bacha Khan while on the other hand their activists were busy in extortions, robberies and other criminal activities.

He said ANP was harassing citizens and deliberately ruining peace in the city and conspiring to take over Karachi . He warned that peace policy of MQM should not be deemed as its weakness.

We appeal to President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ibad, Home Minister Sindh Manzoor Wassan and provincial Chief Executive Syed Qaim Ali Shah the arrest the culprits of ANP under the light given evidences and dole them out strict punishment in accordance with the law,  he appealed.

He also paid tribute to police personnel for their courage and media persons for exposing the real face of ANP with their coverage of the incident.

Other Rabita Committee Members including Yousuf Shawani, Gulfaraz Khattak and Tauseef Khanzada were also present.
