Karachi : Violence on Monday revisited Lyari as agitated residents took to streets and clashed with Police over what they described as ‘biased operation’ of law enforcement agencies against Lyariites.
In police-protestors showdown on Monday, two protesters were killed while over a dozen sustained bullet injuries and were shifted to hospital. Amid the clash, police also found a trussed-up body of a man from Khadda Market who appeared to be in his thirties bearing torture marks.
Commercial activities in the area remained suspended as the protests began in the morning. Angry protestors burnt tyres, pelted passing vehicles and police officials with stones.
Police van was attacked by hand grenades at Aath Chowk while rocket were fired at Lee Market. The police resorted to aerial firing to disperse the mob; which however aggravated violence.
Sources said the killing of an activist of the banned Peoples Aman Committee (PAC), Saqib Pathan on Sunday by the police officials of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) within the remit of Chakiwara police station triggered protests across Lyari. The protesters demanded that police officials involved in the Lyari operation and Sunday s encounter should be apprehended.
A heavy contingents of police and Rangers were deployed to control the protestors.
Those killed in violence on Monday were identified as Ali and Haq Nawaz. Ali was killed at Aath Chowk, while Haq Nawaz at Bakra Peri.
Some of the injured carried to Civil Hospital Karachi by Edhi ambulance Sajid, 25, Saqib, 25, Yasir, 18, Rashid, 22, Ghulam Nabi, 30, Haris, 25, Navid, 20, Saleh, 50, Zakir, 40, Aftab, 45, Mansoor, 25 and Abdur Rehman, 22.
