Karachi: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) in collaboration with National TB control Programme (NTP) Pakistan introduced the latest diagnostic technology for MDR-TB called GeneXpert at Provincial Reference Laboratory of Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases.
It is the latest and rapid diagnostic tool for the early diagnosis of MDR-TB. GeneXpert provides sensitive detection of TB and Rifampin resistance directly from untreated sputum in less than two hours with minimal hands-on time.
The Inaugural Ceremony of the GeneXpert was held Wednesday at lecture hall of Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases and was attended by Professors, Faculty Members, experts from National and Provincial TB Control Program, Consultants and Specialists of Ojha Institute and other hospitals of the city.

Pakistan speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion said that the piloting of GeneXpert will not only help the country in expanding implementation of TB control, but will also help other high-burden TB countries to formulate evidence-based strategies for the use of GeneXpert across different tiers of healthcare services.
NTP is trying to equip the MDR-TB treating hospitals with latest diagnostic facilities and drugs for MDR – TB treatment, and the availability of “GeneXpert” is an example. NTP has started supplying MDR-TB drugs for imited patients but it will increase it very soon.

TB is a big challenge for Pakistan. He explained that the negligence, carelessness and unawareness about this disease lead into a very cruel and complicated form of the disease known as MDR TB. In Ojha hospital, 200 MDR TB patients are on waiting list for the TB treatment. Dow University through its own resources will provide treatment to those waiting patients.
The University is also focusing on special attention on the lengthy and expensive treatment of MDR-TB and trying not to put patient on waiting list of treatment. He advised to start immediate treatment just after diagnosis. The University is regularly organizing the training program for physician.
In his welcome address Professor Iftekhar Ahmed, director Ojha Institute told that Ojha institute is continuously searching for the better treatment of ordinary and MDR TB.
Dr. Sabira Tahseen, Coordinator of National Reference Lab, delivered the lecture on the technique and benefits of “GeneXpert”. She also replied the quarries of audience about this latest diagnostic tool.
